HIV, and how its changed throught out cultures

Since we have been discussing gender, and how it defers from culture to culture I thought this topic was interesting to think about. Tonight on the news one of the discussion topics was HIV/AIDS and how this disease should be a thing of the past but because of the way we as Americans practice sex, it will never be. I had to agree with this, and disagree with this discussion because of a few reasons. First I agree with it because the use of condoms is not as common as it should be. Its not because teens do not know the risks, its simply because we seem to have this idea of "it could never happen to me", even though as the years continue the statistics for STD's and HIV seem to go up. In out culture safe sex is promoted, however cultures whom are tribs in Africa safe sex is not something that is promoted. This disease kills to many people in that country, however that does not change the awareness for the problem in that country. Now being in the United States, and being able to know about the real dangers you would think would change peoples believe about using protection. The new casters showed this diagram that was picture of different people and they were all connected by the lines, and said you only think your sleeping with one person....so do 63 others. It was shocking to me because its crazy that its true, and people dont realize it. Over the years our culture has become a live in the moment now type mindset and tend not to think about the long term consequenses to the actions. I choose to talk about this because I find it interesting how out country educates teens very well on the dangers of unprotected sex and we still have a huge problem with STD's. The AIDS problem is one that will continue and even as our culture, and other countries culture change simply because the mentally of people will not.
