Alright, here is a short review of the class for April 20. At the beginning of class, our professor handed out the review sheet for the final. We were told the basis on our presentation and mostly on the fact that it will be graded on how much reliable information is presented in the time allowed which is 1.5 minutes for each person in the group. The final review will be under the resources tab for Anthropology for those who weren't at the class. Both the paper and the presentation are due on the 27th of April. The review sessions for the final are on May 2 from 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. for LM and Tuesday May 3 at 2 p.m. for the TA.
The class itself focused mainly on Applied Anthropology which is a category on the review sheet. it focused on understanding local approaches to problems and using cultural knowledge to solve problems within larger social systems. One movie we reviewed was "The Goddess and the Computer" which was the first movie on the dvd that came with the book. The movie focused mainly on how the Balinese use irrigation to grow their rice and how modern irrigation compares to the old standard way of production of involving Priests and other factors (ducks, insects, sharing the water all the way down the line) involved in the proper growth of all products.
The second movie we observed was "The Medium is the Massuase"--A Balinese Massage and "House of the Spirit". Both movies focused on healers or doctors in two different regions and one movie centered around spiritual healing through massages while the other movie was more scientific even though spiritual beliefs were still involved.
We were suppose to read an article on a man named John Meletse for today and the man was colored, gay, and had AIDs (he got AIDs because he was date raped) and due to that, he became segregated from every group even though his family accepted him for all of it.
