Internationl Trade and Anthropology

I watch the documentary Life and Debt by Stephanie Black. This movie was surprising and had many shocking facts. The question in my mind is how does it related to cultural anthropology or even anthropology in general? That question is studying patterns of international trade. We have talked about international trade and how it related to the Dani and them farming sweet potatoes. This movie showed the IMF.

The IMF stands for International Monetary funds. This association is set up to loan out money to companies. In this movie the IMF lends money to Jamaica. Jamaican people are actually very poor. The factories that the IMF set up were to sew clothes like Tommy Hilfiger and other High end designer brands. The factories operated in free trade areas.

This made it so the factories didn’t have to follow standardized laws that are vital to human rights. This is problematic for many different reasons. The works were not paid hardly anything. Jamaican workers only received thirty dollars for two weeks’ worth of work. They also had money taken out of their checks for thing like education that were not really going to educational funds.

While international trade can be a good thing. This case did not present international trade to benefiting the community.
